Course Description


This course will address the impact of fear of falling and fall avoidance behaviors in the geriatric population; how to establish baseline measures and progress towards goals; practical interventions to reduce likelihood for falls; strategies to reduce fear of falling and fall avoidance behavior.

    Course objectives


At the completion of this class, the participant will be able to:

1.Accurately screen for fear of falling and fall avoidance beliefs

2.Perform appropriate evaluative techniques to highlight fear of falling

3.Establish appropriate goals to reduce fear of falling and fall avoidance behaviors

4.Provide effective interventions to reduce fear of falling and fear avoidance beliefs

5.Plan for progressive reduction in fear avoidance beliefs

6.Recognize when to involve other disciplines

  Method for determination of achievement of objectives

Participants will reports a case study demonstrating opportunities to improve a current patient along with completing a post-test requiring 80% success


Instructor Bio

Andy McCormick PT, DPT, GCS, OCS is the Director of Rehab for NHC in Columbia TN and is a faculty member of their Geriatric Residency Program. In addition to treating patients, Dr. McCormick teaches various topics of continuing education impacting the geriatric populations within as well as outside of NHC. Dr. McCormick is the recent recipient of the TPTA Excellence in Clinical Practice Award and past Clinical Instructor of the Year with Tennessee State University Physical Therapy Program.
